Thanks for checking out the site. This is the place to download music by General Assemblage. General Assemblage is mostly the work of one guy, Philip Smith, who sometimes collaborates with others, appropriates, and remixes using elements from studio sessions, found sounds, and various other noise generators. The work generally veers in two directions. There are songs, which are pretty straightforward. They follow a basic alt rock direction — guitars, drums, vocals, verse, chorus, verse, often saturated in generous doses of reverb, delay, echo fuzziness, all that good stuff — with occasional detours into more spaced-out, psych, folky, acoustic, enigmatically lyrical, trancey kind of stuff. Then there are “sounds”, which are less straightforward. Make of these what you may. This is where the assemblage part comes in. Sometimes soft and ambient a la Harold Budd or Brian Eno, sometimes more primal and harsh (but never quite abrasive), sometimes both, neither, or whatever. Some pieces are more completed than others, any of it is subject to remixing, remastering, rewriting, use as fodder in another assemblage, and so on.

Everything here is free for the downloadin’. Writing, recording, compiling all this is about all I can handle right now. A more formal release would be nice, but no definite plans. Special thanks to my good friend Josh for putting this site together! Posted tracks will rotate, so check back occasionally for new stuff.
